About the Artwork:
"Dreaming In Pastel" designed by First Nations contemporary artist, Emily Joanna Reid.
This artwork is a visual representation of my dreaming patterns and the way the mind gathers, processes and connects information.
At first glance, the artwork may appear complex and chaotic, reflecting the often unpredictable nature of our thoughts and dreams. In contrast, the soft pastel colours bring a sense of ease, comfort and gentleness, creating calm within the complexity.
It’s fascinating by the way the mind works, particularly when we dream.
Throughout the artwork, clusters of dots connect and intertwine, representing the small pieces of information, memories and experiences we collect throughout our everyday lives.
The circles containing “U” shapes represent people — those we meet, speak with and share moments with — and the conversations that become part of what we carry with us.
Although the artwork is made up of many individual elements, each one is connected in some way. Much like dreaming, things that may seem unrelated or fragmented can come together to form something meaningful — reflecting the way our minds weave people, memories, experiences and emotions into one continuous story.
I’ve always been very interested in how the mind works, particularly when we dream. Some of the dots shown connecting together represent small parts of everyday information we collate together. The circles with “U” shapes represent the people we have conversations with.
This artwork shows many individual parts, but it all somehow connects.
